The frequency of disasters - in particular natural disasters - and the resulting damages have significantly increased within the last decades. The scientifically leading Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology (www.cedim.de), which is managed by the Research University of Karlsruhe (TH) and the GeoForschungsZentrums Potsdam (GFZ) (Germany's National Research Centre for Geosciences), focuses on the better understanding and timely recognition of risks as well as on an optimised evaluation of resulting consequences. In order to transfer the results and methods deriving from several years of research activities into practice the Research University of Karlsruhe (TH) and the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam have now founded cedim AG. "This technology company will actively implement the know-how and results of CEDIM", explains Professor Dr. Lothar Stempniewski, one of the two managing directors of cedim AG.
Apart from the University and the GFZ engage AG and two professors hold shares of the new company. The founders agree that the transfer of research results into a practical application can only be achieved by means of a private company. Stempniewski: "Customised projects with a mere application focus, marketing and sales are no tasks for a research institution". The company is based in Karlsruhe. The researchers would like to demonstrate that these kind of models enable the creation of new jobs as well as the generation of revenues for research.
cedim AG disposes of two business fields: Risk Management Consulting and Development of Information Systems. "With these two business fields we will be able to offer a new quality of risk prevention and risk management allowing companies to better prepare for such incidents in the future", says Stempniewski. Potential clients of cedim AG are e.g. bigger industrial enterprises, insurance companies or reinsurance companies as well as authorities and organisations with security tasks on regional, national and international level. cedim AG currently discusses with several regions and the state authority the support in developing a emergency prevention information system.
Based on the extensive research and development activities carried out within the Centre of Excellence CEDIM (www.cedim.de) we dispose of methods and systems enabling the better un-derstanding and timely recognition of risks as well as an optimised evaluation of resulting con-sequences. Together we can thus significantly increase the efficiency of the planning, control and management of measures which are to be taken in the case of disasters on operational, tactical and strategic level.
